History of the Lambda Pi Chapter
of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

The Lambda Pi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., is a graduate chapter located in Kinston, North Carolina. Its existence did not come about overnight, but after many, many months of work and planning. Before being granted a local chapter, Kinston was a very active part of the Nu Alpha Chapter made up of most of the towns and cities in Eastern North Carolina. With Nu Alpha, its memories and ideas of fraternization deeply embedded in the hearts of the Kinston brothers, it was a difficult decision to make. The possibility of forming a local chapter was first discussed in a Kinston area meeting sometime in 1967. Though there was no definitive action taken at the time, the idea never left the minds of many of the Kinston brothers.

Approximately five years later, a similar discussion arose in a Kinston area meeting. However, at this meeting, a motion was made that started the Kinston area on the road to becoming the present day Lambda Pi Chapter. The wheels were put in motion when the Kinston area representative was given the authority to seek necessary information and instructions for forming a local chapter. An application for chartering a graduate chapter in Kinston was submitted and approved at the Supreme Council meeting in July of 1973. The Kinston brothers, being totally dedicated to and a functioning part of Nu Alpha, completed the year as members in good standing with Nu Alpha. Finally, after years of consideration and months of hard work, the chapter charter was presented to Kinston in February of 1974. Thus young, but enthused, Lambda Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was born.
